School continues its expansion with 26 years of experience in bilingual primary education. The school’s new campus offers a complete bilingual program in Portuguese and English for students in 1st through 5th grade. In 2017, the school will move on to Middle School, offering 6th grade and continuing to 9th grade in the coming years.
The Brazilian program follows the National Curricular Parameters set forth by the Department of Education, and is only further enriched by the school’s constructivist methodology and special activities. The curriculum includes Portuguese, Arts, Physical Education, Capoeira, Music, and daily immersions in the English language, among others. This English Program strengthens verbal fluency, reading, and writing. It also gives students the chance to explore other subjects in English, including Science, History, Geography, Math, and Multiculturalism.
The school also values interdisciplinary projects that help students connect class content with outside experiences, giving lessons new meanings. For example, the Easter Bunny’s Factory, complete with a bank, office, marketing team, and stores, or the School Science Fair, complete with a round-table debate, experiments, and exhibit open to parents. The school also hosts an annual Book Fair and Rhymes that Teach day, as well as promotes student participation in the end of the year musical, not to mention the extracurricular classes offered before and after school like soccer, ballet, circus, gymnastics and ensemble.
One teacher per subject, starting in Elementary School
Students start having one teacher for every subject in 1st grade. All of the instructors are certified teachers; each specialized in a different field. They get together at least once a week to organize projects and talk about each student’s needs and development. They also contribute in organizing new teaching strategies. Every grade has its own “Homeroom Teacher,” who is responsible for giving assignments, checking notebooks, collecting homework, meeting with parents, and facilitating communication between parents and the school.
I am, I can!
Dr. Grace Mitchell’s teaching philosophy becomes even more significant in Elementary and Middle School, building on and even further developing the basic curriculum. This methodology helps students become more autonomous and encourages them to be active learners, building a confidence that will contribute to their future success, whether abroad or in Brazil.
From the classroom to the outdoors
Students also participate in a variety of activities outside of school, more commonly known as “Outdoor Classroom.” They visit NGOs, parks, zoos, exhibits, and other places that offer lessons aligned with the school’s curriculum.
Healthy Eating in all grades
Students of all ages are encouraged to eat healthy at Tigrinhos & Golden Tigers. ABC Educational Kitchen, the school’s own kitchen, is equipped with an excellent staff which includes both a nutritionist and an educational chef. The menu is balanced, varied, and inviting, ensuring students are always trying new recipes.
Groups and Schedules
Tigrinhos & Golden Tigers offers both extended period and full-day options. Being at school longer contributes to learning. The students are happy, interested, and engaged in their activities. The school continues to work with small groups, which increases student participation and keeps students focused in class, giving teachers the opportunity to work closely with each and every one.
A few words from a Golden Tigers parent
“I never could have imagined how much a bilingual education would contribute to my children’s development. After 4 years of Tigrinhos and 3 years of Golden Tigers, I am left so impressed with their cultural, emotional, and academic development, not to mention the fluency in English, civic participation, social involvement, sustainable thinking, and healthy eating habits. I have no doubt as to how much the “I am, I can” philosophy contributed to their success. I am so proud to see them speaking English, participating in school shows, attending assemblies, becoming increasingly confident, and contributing to their communities. I am incredibly pleased with the school’s curriculum and methodology. I could spend hours talking about the school’s best qualities, but simply put: Thank you!!” – Andréia Marianno, Pedro and João’s mom.
