It’s vacation time! Although kids are not necessarily following a set routine like during school, specialists stress that is it important to try to stick to certain habits regarding meals, particularly during the day.
Skipping meals contributes to overweight and obesity because kids are more likely to compensate for the lost calories by eating more for their next meal, which puts them at risk for serious diseases later in life.
According to recent news, the last three months of 2016 were the warmest ones on record. Studies indicate that 2017 will very likely be hotter than the last century’s average. Therefore, there is nothing more important than hydration.
Kids don’t usually take breaks during playtime in order to replenish fluids. The intense heat can make them particularly vulnerable to dehydration. It’s essential for them to drink water and replace the lost minerals. In addition to water, fruit, fruit juice, and many vegetables are excellent sources of hydration. Watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, carrots, and spinach are also great options; they are not only good for hydration, but they are very filling as well.
Another interesting tip is to make smart substitutions. Replace high calorie food items with low-calorie options or food with high nutritious value. Instead of cakes and sweets, try an alternative that is rich in fibers and whole grains, or is low sugar. Substitute soft drinks for natural fruit juice.
Lastly, just because you and your family are on vacation does not mean you can’t eat healthy: pack your own food, take it with you and enjoy your free time! Remember: your kid’s health always comes first.
